At least six people — including a mother and her 9-year-old son — were injured after a taxi crashed into a New York City sidewalk on Christmas day, according to authorities.

The New York Police Department said in a statement to PEOPLE that officers responded to a call of “pedestrians struck” just after 4 p.m. on a sidewalk located on Sixth Avenue near Herald Square, a popular tourist destination during the holidays steps away from Macy’s.

When officers arrived on the scene, they were informed that a 58-year-old taxi driver had “experienced a medical emergency” while driving his cab down the street. The incident caused him to “drive onto the sidewalk,” the NYPD said, injuring at least six people.

None of the victims were named but three of the six struck by the taxi — a 9-year-old boy, a 41-year-old woman and 49-year-old woman — were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police noted the boy had a laceration to his right thigh, while the 41-year-old and 49-year-old had a head and leg injury, respectively.

The taxi driver, who also wasn’t named, was transported to a nearby hospital too in “stable condition” for “further evaluation.” Three others injured in the incident refused medical attention at the scene, NYPD said.

Police did not say what kind of medical emergency the cab driver experienced or what led up to the crash. Police have not yet made any arrests related to the case “at this time” and said that its investigation into the incident is “ongoing.”

Law enforcement sources told NBC New York that the 9-year-old boy and his mother who were injured by the cab had been visiting New York City for the holidays from Australia.

Photos taken from the crash site showed the front of the yellow cab open and slightly crushed. Several other sides of the cab appeared to have sustained dents as well.

An unnamed bystander, who witnessed the incident and said his wife was hit in the shoulder by the taxi, told WABC-TV that he sprung into action to try to help the people who were injured after the crash.

“I ran over and noticed there was a little boy, his leg was underneath the front passenger tire as it was spinning,” he recalled to the outlet.

“And then there was a group of people — one gentleman went over [and[ shut the car off, got into it [to] shut it off,” he continued. “There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, lifted the car back and then that’s when I grabbed the little boy, got him to the corner, realized that what ended up being his mom underneath.”
