In a fresh legal development, the Madras High Court has issued notices to Tarc Studio LLP and Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP following a copyright infringement petition filed by AP International. The plea alleges unauthorised usage of film clips from the 2005 Rajinikanth-starrer Chandramukhi in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale.

AP International, which currently holds the copyright over the film’s audio and video rights (excluding audio cassette and CD rights for certain international territories), claims that the producers of the documentary used portions of Chandramukhi without acquiring prior permission or proper licensing. Instead, they reportedly used clips sourced from YouTube to include in the docu-series.

According to the petition, a cease-and-desist notice was served to both the producers and the streaming giant, demanding the removal of the unauthorised content and seeking Rs.5 crore in damages. Only after receiving this legal notice, the petition states, did the documentary team reach out to initiate rights negotiations.

AP International has now urged the court to grant a permanent injunction against the use of any Chandramukhi footage in the documentary and to mandate the removal of the existing portions from all streaming platforms.

Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale, released on Netflix in 2022, offers viewers an intimate look at the personal and professional journey of the South Indian superstar. Directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon, the docu-series also highlights her marriage to filmmaker Vignesh Shivan and features glimpses from her decades-long film career, making use of visuals from many iconic films — including, controversially, Chandramukhi.

This isn’t the first time the documentary has made headlines. Upon its release, it led to a very public spat between actress Nayanthara and actor Dhanush, her former brother-in-law. The disagreement, which involved the depiction of past family ties, escalated into legal exchanges and social media uproar, drawing widespread attention to the series.

Notably, earlier this year, Sivaji Productions, the original producers of Chandramukhi, had issued a clarification that they had not sued Nayanthara for Rs.5 crore and had granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the documentary. However, AP International, as the current rights holder, asserts that their consent was never sought — forming the basis of the current legal action.

The case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks.
