As anticipation builds for James Gunn’s Superman, Nicholas Hoult, who takes on the legendary role of Lex Luthor, is offering fans a glimpse into the mind games and power plays we can expect from the film’s central antagonist.

Speaking about how other superheroes like Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho tie into Lex’s grand plan, Hoult said, “It’s controlling the narrative, the public opinion and then also, without getting specific, using powers of certain people to find workarounds for things. And he really is playing chess, whereas others are playing checkers.”
It’s a revealing look into how the film aims to elevate Luthor from being just a typical villain to a calculated master strategist — a true foil to Superman’s moral clarity. Hoult also praised his co-stars, highlighting the emotional depth and energy they brought to their roles. Speaking about María Gabriela de Faría and Sara Sampaio, Hoult said, “Gaby and Sara were wonderful. Gaby’s dedication to that character, the physicality of it, the humanity of it, and what that character has given up. Just a wonderful performance emotionally and physically. And for Sara as well, she brings so much light and joy to this world, but also a really emotional punch as well. And she gives that character a great dynamic throughout.”
He also commended Anthony Carrigan, who plays Metamorpho, for his transformative performance. “Anthony as well, playing Metamorpho, such a wonderful actor. First of all, the look and the makeup of that character is incredible, but then how Anthony projects his performance through that as well.”
Directed by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and explores his journey to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. The film introduces multiple DC heroes and promises a fresh start to the new DC Universe. It is slated for a July 11 release in the U.S. and marks a major chapter in DC Studios’ reimagined slate.
