The cast of Lanterns just keeps growing! Nicole Arti Parker is the latest actress to join the upcoming Green Lantern series for the DC Universe.
With Lanterns now filming, it’s likely that the cast will grow exponentially as new actors and actresses are brought onto set to film their scenes. The DC Universe series is already jammed with characters from the Green Lantern mythos, from staples like Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro to new additions like Kelly MacDonald’s Sheriff Kerry. These standout performers are now joined by the wonderous Nicole Ari Parker, best known for her roles in projects like Remember the Titans and Boogie Nights.
Nicole Ari Parker is a surprising addition to the Lanterns cast for many fans, mostly since the character she is playing has rarely been seen in any other incarnation of the DC Universe. As confirmed by Variety, Parker is playing the mother of the Green Lantern John Stewart. She’s set to play a recurring role as the character, taking on the name Deborah Stewart, with the description of her character being below.
“Formidable and tenacious, Bernadette refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds. At her core, she’s a fiercely protective mother who has worked her entire life to ensure that she and her family will not be passed over.”
What Role Will Nicole Ari Parker Play In Lanterns?
While many may assume that Deborah Stewart was created exclusively for Lanterns, Nicole Ari Parker is actually playing an established character in the DC Universe. John Stewart’s mom, at the time named Shirley Stewart, first appeared in the Green Lantern comics all the way back in 2014. While she hasn’t played a large role in the book since then, it is important to note that the character has dementia.
This is important because a lot of the speculation around Lanterns has to do with mental degradation. From Mosaic World to Hal Jordan’s slow descent into Parallax, all signs point to the DC Universe’s Green Lantern series having a strong focus on one’s mind. Having Nicole Ari Parker playing the mother of one of the leads who has dementia could be a great way to tie John Stewart’s personal story into the wider reaching themes of the project.
