Nicole Richie is looking back at a scary run-in with the paparazzi.
On the Dec. 11 episode of Call Her Daddy, the Simple Life alum, 43, opened up about her “wildest interaction” with the paparazzi and how she struggled to enforce boundaries with being in the public eye early on in her career.
“Once I was hospitalized, I got crashed into,” she said, explaining that a car hit her on the road. “My son [Sparrow] was like 6 weeks old. [But] he was not in the car, thank God!”
When host Alex Cooper asked how she felt about the attention she received during that time in her life, Richie opened up about the challenges she faced with advocating for herself and her privacy.
“It was very hard to implement any sort of like boundaries because the world was not really acting like you deserved that at all,” she explained. “And I was so young and just like didn’t know how to stand up for myself like that.”
“I like I accepted a lot more, which I think is very common for your 20s,” she added, noting that she had a tendency of “accepting things” that would never fly today.
Richie and her costar and friend Paris Hilton became household names after their show The Simple Life aired in the early 2000s. The series — which ran from 2003 to 2007 — saw the daughter of Lionel Richie and hotel heiress traverse the U.S. picking up odd jobs and, eventually, entering the corporate world.
More than 16 years after the original series’ finale, PEOPLE confirmed in May 2024 that the two were reuniting for a brand new television series.

With the duo picking up right where they left off, Richie previously told Variety in April that her son Sparrow, now 14, and her daughter Harlow, 16, weren’t fans of the 2003 series. Richie shares her two kids with husband Joel Madden, whom she wed in 2010.
“The Simple Life is apparently having a big moment on TikTok, so they do tell me that they watch clips on TikTok,” she said of her kids. “Their friends watch it. I get a lot of eye rolls in my house all the time. It’s right on brand with how they see me, in general.”
