Malcolm in the Middle is coming back — but you won’t be seeing THIS beloved actor on the reboot!
In case you didn’t hear, the classic sitcom is making its return after a reboot was green lit by Disney+. The story of Francis, Reese, Malcolm, and Dewey will continue in a four-episode limited series on the streaming platform, but it’ll be missing a fan-favorite…

Sadly for fans, you won’t get to see the little genius’ life in the present play out on your TV screens with Erik. And the original actor’s reason for bailing is actually pretty on par for the character. In the newest episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast, Erik’s TV dad Bryan Cranston revealed the former child star is actually going to school for his master’s degree.

While chatting with hosts David Spade and Dana Carvey, he said:
“He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now.”
Wow!
Despite not returning for the reboot, the 33-year-old is excited for the show’s comeback. Bryan said:
“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back, He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic’.”
In fact, after leaving Hollywood in 2010, Erik has no plans to ever return to the screen:
“He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was 9 or something. So, I’m not into it’.”
Bummer for Malcolm in the Middle fans, for sure! But we love to hear a childhood stardom success story! HUGE congrats to Erik.
