Rachel Brosnahan has revealed how James Gunn’s Superman evokes Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
Expectations are sky high for Superman. The project is written and directed by James Gunn, one of the most popular superhero filmmakers since Christopher Nolan. The cast is stacked with award-nominated actors, such as Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult. This not even to mention how well the footage has been received so far! This has led many to wonder if the project has a chance at toppling The Dark Knight as the best superhero movie of the modern era.
And it seems these comparisons aren’t just stemming from quality. Rachel Brosnahan commented on how Superman is similar to The Dark Knight trilogy during a set visit attended by Heroic Hollywood founder Umberto Gonzalez. The actress remarks that Christopher Nolan’s Batman films were a reaction to the times, and she feels the same way about Superman.
“I think we could really use a shot in the arm of hope right now. A lot of these movies, the Nolan Batman movies, were such a specific representation of these comics at a specific moment in time. I think part of the reason they were so successful is because they felt like what we needed. The hope is that this version is the Superman we need right now.”
Will Superman Be Better Than The Dark Knight?
Truthfully, there’s no reason to pit two spectacular superhero movies against each other. However, Rachel Brosnahan’s comments about how Superman ties into The Dark Knight reveal a bit about how the project could affect the culture. Much like how Christopher Nolan’s trilogy turned the idea of superheroes being for kids on their head, James Gunn’s Superman film may rebuke the corporate cynicism that so many find unpalatable with the genre.
Of course, with the film due out in just a few weeks, there isn’t much time for speculation about whether Superman will dethrone The Dark Knight as the best superhero movie by fans. However, if Rachel Brosnahan is right, it seems as though Christopher Nolan and James Gunn may very well have made the definitive versions of the faces of DC.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
