And he is excited. “It’s the life of a fire fighter in Mumbai; the internal and external conflicts they deal with on a daily basis,” he said. “The film has a bit of a thrill element as well, and some spectacular fire action sequences. We shot Agni before Madgaon Express! Pratik Gandhi and Divyenndu first met on my set. It was wonderful working with both these talented gentlemen. Excel, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, are extremely good producers and they backed me up from the get go! So yes, we could say and do whatever we aimed for. Of course, within a budget and a schedule. I have great actors, a dream team, and a subject that’s unique and first if its kind in India! No one has made a film on firefighters I think, and we have done it. Let’s hope it looks good on that screen.”

Rahul Dholakia admitted that is it becoming increasingly difficult for filmmakers like him to make films on their own terms. “It’s getting difficult,” he said. “Too many people to please, or rather you have to be wary of displeasing anyone. I think filmmaking has become more of commerce battles and so the drive and passion on all fronts are losing their spunk. Everyone is scared. Why? We are storytellers and we should be able to say our stories fearlessly! It took me seven years to put together Agni. Had to drop some films. One or two dropped me.”

The filmmaker added, “I spent a couple of years doing two documentaries, one of them was for the police department in America where families and colleagues of all the men and women officers who died in the line of duty are honored. I also met many firefighters here for Agni. But the main reason is, I write my own scripts and most of these are researched thoroughly, which takes me a lot of time, so I guess that’s the reason for the delay. Luck also plays its own part. However, I prefer enjoying the process than rushing into it. Shooting is normally quick but post-production took a long time in Agni. The VFX heavy and we were extremely particular about the nature of fire.”

Rahul last directed Shah Rukh Khan in Raees. The director would love to collaborate with the Khan again. “Shah Rukh is one of the finest and most passionate and talented person I have worked with. I really enjoyed working with him in Raees. But it’s been 7 years now, and he has gone on to give the biggest blockbusters after that. I love SRK. I would love to work with him but, so does every filmmaker in the country. I think he takes that call, not us.”
