Is Robert Downey Jr. going to be an amazing Doctor Doom? The directors of Avengers: Doomsday tease the actor’s preparation to take on the role of the iconic villain.
One of the most perplexing decisions to come out of the MCU in recent years, and perhaps of all time, is the decision to bring back Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. While a multiversal variant of the Latverian villain being Iron Man could certainly be interesting, many saw it as the studio erasing one of the most beloved villains in comic book history in order to cash in on some much needed nostalgia to the earlier phases.
However, it seems as though Robert Downey Jr. may be taking the role of Doctor Doom a lot more seriously than fans may have first thought. Avengers: Doomsday directors Anthony and Joe Russo recently spoke on the actor’s commitment to the role during a recent interview with ET. According to them, Downey is already crafting up a rich inner world for the villain that goes deeper than the upcoming film could ever achieve on screen.
“He’s writing backstory, costume ideas… he just really loves rich three-dimensional characters,” Anthony revealed in the interview. “And I think he sees a real opportunity here.”
Doctor Doom’s Role In Avengers: Doomsday
While fans obviously know that Doctor Doom will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, very little has been revealed by the directors about the character’s role in the film. In fact, it hasn’t even truly been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the main villain, despite the namesake. Rather, it’s possible that he plays a conflicted anti-hero who tries to save the multiverse by any means necessary.
This may seem a bit rote for the MCU, especially as the directors of Avengers: Doomsday are the same guys that did Avengers: Endgame. However, Doctor Doom has always leaned on the side of anti-hero, even more than Thanos. Giving the character an intricate arc across the two biggest films of the multiverse saga could be a chance to do the character justice, even if not everyone is on board with Robert Downey Jr. playing him.
