Are celebs really doomed to only date other celebs? Or at least people who work in show business? That’s what Scarlett Johansson thinks!
ScarJo sat down with her Black Widow father David Harbour for Interview Magazine this week, and dad brought up dating. Unlike Scarlett, who is now happily married with kids, Lily Allen‘s ex is back in the dating pool. And he thinks at this point he knows not to go near non-celebrities. He lamented:
“I tried to date lawyers and business people in my twenties, but there’s something about being a carny freak that normal people don’t get. You’ve dated artists pretty much, right?”
The Jurassic World Rebirth star agreed:
“Yeah. I’ve had serious relationships with people that were not in the industry, and I found one of the challenges was that the person had no idea of what I needed to do my job. Obviously, if I was dating an oncologist, I wouldn’t know what they needed to do for their job. But it’s not so abstract.”
Perhaps she’s referring to her French journalist ex-husband Romain Dauriac here??
Obviously this is true of all professions, that other folks don’t fully understand. But part of dating and marriage is learning and people need and then being supportive, right? There are other issues, in ScarJo’s mind though — and it comes down to the whole love scene thing:
“I also think it’s easy to create a lot of jealousy when a person is not involved in the industry, because actors by nature are very free-spirited and they create very intimate relationships with people at work. They can be loyal to a partner and also very engaged in all these other kinds of relationships, and I think it can be a blurry line for some people.”
Huh. We have seen that in particular it’s been hard for a lot of men to deal with their actor wives and girlfriends having onscreen lovers. There’s a lot of insecurity out there anyway, and great chemistry is like kerosene on that fire.

Of course, in their defense, we’ve also seen a hell of a lot of co-stars fell in love with each other for real after making out on camera, so… Maybe it’s not so crazy to be wary?
One last thing non-celebs don’t understand? Having fans. Scarlett states:
“Also, to have a relationship with the public can be a complicated thing for people outside of the industry to understand.”
We mean… her We Bought A Zoo love interest Matt Damon would clearly disagree! But OK!
The two Marvel stars then compared notes about having to stick to strict routines in their off hours while they were in the middle of a gig. David put forth something even he thought was too far:
“There’s a certain way that we sort of put our lives on hold for a character. This may sound crazy, but when I’m in a complex scene with someone that’s going extremely well, I feel like I’m living in a deeper way than I am in normal life. And sometimes, if that’s going to be the focus of my day, I’m not going to want to waste life outside of that.”
But you know what? Colin Jost‘s wife agreed!
“Yeah, I have that too.”
The Stranger Things star acknowledged, laughing:
“Weirdos. Both of us.”
Ha! Well, as long as they know, right?
Do you think YOU would be able to handle the weirdness of dating an actor??
