Is Anthony Mackie already putting down the shield? The Captain America star reveals new details about Avengers: Secret Wars, suggesting he may be stepping back from the MCU.
With filming for Avengers: Doomsday right around the corner, fans are hungry for details about how the MCU will cap off its multiverse saga with Avengers: Secret Wars. The project is set to be a make-or-break moment for this new era of the MCU, with Anthony Mackie set to take a leading role in forming the new Avengers team following the team dissolving in Captain America: Civil War (albeit they briefly reformed for Avengers: Endgame).
Sadly, it seems that fans will have to wait quite a while to get more details about Avengers: Secret Wars. While Doomsday is set to start production in less than a month and extend through the summer, it won’t lead directly into the next project. According to Anthony Mackie, he’ll be able to prop up his feet for about a year before having to don the Captain America mantle once more to close out the most controversial chapter in the MCU.
“We shoot in London through the summer,” Mackie explained in a recent interview with Deadline about his role in the upcoming Avengers films. “And then the following summer we shoot the next one [Avengers: Secret Wars]. It’s going to be a full slate.”
Is Anthony Mackie Done As Captain America?
With Anthony Mackie only just now getting his first solo film as Captain America, many thought that Avengers: Secret Wars and Doomsday would be the start of a long road ahead in the MCU. However, it may end up being the opposite. Continuing to talk about the project, Mackie reveals that the film will be a “changing of the guard” as he hands the torch of the Avengers to a new generation, suggesting he won’t be leading the super team for very long.
“I’m the OG now. I’m the only guy,. I’m the Avenger from the old group that brings in the new group. So it’ll be a changing of the guard. As you see in the new trailer, Ross is like, ‘I want you to start up The Avengers.’ So I have to figure out who’s going to be the new Avengers. That’s the perk of being Captain America. I get to pick who I want to hang out with.”
Of course, it’s possible that Anthony Mackie sticks around as Captain America in the MCU for a long time to come, even if a new hero takes control of the Avengers team after Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it does seem that Marvel is finally ready to take their full leap in embracing the new generation of heroes. Their hesitancy to do so beforehand is one of the main reasons fans consider the latest saga in the franchise to be so hit-or-miss. Though which path is truly better for the universe is only known by The Watchers themselves.
Avengers: Secret Wars is set to hit theaters in May 2027. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
