Aamir ended up taking over the project originally intended for Hrithik. Victor had written the film specifically for Hrithik and had been in discussions with him for over a year. Hrithik requested a few changes to the final draft, and during that time, Aamir asked Victor what he was working on. When Victor mentioned he was making revisions for Hrithik’s next film, Thugs, Aamir expressed interest, heard the script, and immediately said he wanted to do it as-is. As a result, Victor dropped Hrithik and brought Aamir on board.
However, Thugs was never really a natural fit for Aamir. The pirate-themed, sword-fighting action genre was outside his usual territory. The film was fundamentally flawed at the script level—it wasn’t just a matter of poor execution. The story and concept felt outdated and lacked appeal. With Hrithik, the film might have worked better as a stylish, popcorn entertainer with slick action sequences. But with Aamir, the audience’s expectations shifted toward a strong, meaningful script, and when the film didn’t deliver, it flopped badly.
