Will Avengers: Doomsday defy all expectations? The Russo Brothers reveal their desire to outdo themselves with their upcoming Secret Wars duology.
In many ways, Avengers: Endgame may have been the worst thing to happen to the MCU. While the film was certainly one of the biggest cultural events in history, one can’t deny that it colored how fans perceived the films going forward, especially when it comes to those that don’t seem to connect to the broader story being built within the Multiverse Saga.
And with it being announced that Avengers: Endgame directors the Russo Brothers are set to return for both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, expectations for the two films have gone sky high. The projects aren’t only expected to meet the standard of quality set by the Infinity Saga, but surpass it as the Multiverse Saga introduces the expectations of characters beyond the MCU, such as Fox’s X-Men universe and Wesley Snipes’ Blade.
The Russo Brothers Want To ‘Beat’ Endgame
The Russo Brothers discussed these expectations in a recent chat with GamesRadar. It seems as though the pressure most would find debilitating is seen as a challenge for the directing duo. They don’t just want to beat Endgame in execution, but rather they want to beat their former selves when crafting the story of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
“Absolutely, we want to beat those younger versions of ourselves,” Joe Rosso explained. “We have to be, right? Because we have to outdo those movies in a way, or we at least have to take you on an equally engaging journey.”
The Russo Brothers certainly have an uphill battle to beat Endgame. The superhero media environment is very different than it was even five years ago, with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars set to come out in a world hostile to the MCU brand. And with a number of controversial creative decisions already in motion, it’ll be interesting to see how (or if) they can recover good will with fans and critics alike.
