What characters will be the focus of the new DC Universe? Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reveals the four heroes most important to their long-term strategy.
Warner Bros. Discovery is trying to build a new castle of their empire of IP with the DC Universe. While the studio is laying a strong foundation for the franchise with Superman, anyone who has built a bridge out of popsicle sticks knows that a single support beam is basically nothing. Any successful franchise needs to have multiple characters pulling their weight.
While the DC Universe has many to choose from, Warner Bros. Discovery seems to have a few in particular on their mind. While speaking on a recent earnings call (via ComicBookMovie.com), CEO David Zaslav explained that four characters sit at the center of their 10-year-plan for DC Studios due to the value their assets provide: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl.
“It’s important for us to be able to sell our content to third-parties [but] as we look at our titles, there are many that are really just for Warner Bros. When you look at the major characters with – that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world. Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl. So those are – we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.”
Who Are The Faces Of The DC Universe?
Of course, nobody expected Batman and Superman to be left off the list of key faces in the DC Universe. However, fans may be shocked to see Wonder Woman on there. While she was extraordinarily prominent in the last live-action incarnation of the franchise, David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery have not made any push for the character in quite some time, actually cancelling more projects than they’ve greenlit.
Supergirl is another interesting pick. While Wonder Woman has always been seen as a member of the DC Universe’s trinity, Supergirl has always been seen as second fiddle to Superman. This is largely due to her having a similar supporting cast. If David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery believe that she’ll truly be the fourth pillar of the DC Universe, it’s possible that her upcoming film plants her squarely as the core of the cosmic side of the franchise.
